One Year Ago…
One year ago my first published book hit the stands and flew to the top of the charts on Amazon. After spending nearly a year writing a book it is such a great feeling to finally get it in print and share it with the world. What a ride this past year has been with magazine articles, TV appearances and speaking engagements giving me the opportunity to share my message and story with as many women as possible. To date I have sold over 10,000 copies.
Initially my goal was to share the message in my book with as many women in the general population as I could to inspire them to do something different when it comes to their exercise, nutrition and mindset helping them to make a breakthrough physically and mentally. I had set the goal to be on Oprah which to me is the ultimate in reaching my target audience (she hasn’t called yet…).
Over the past year I have been featured in a number of magazines, including many mainstream magazines (not just fitness magazines) and I have been featured on TV 7 times sharing my message with the audience I wanted to share it with.
But as I was promoting my book I realized there is one secret that every single one of those women who transformed themselves in my book had that any female who buys my book does not have.
That secret is having a coach.
Now don’t get me wrong over the year I have been inundated with success stories from people from around the world following the programs in my book and I have been able to help people online who have followed the program in my book and never even met me including Roxane…
But having a coach is a huge advantage and I believe a major piece of the puzzle to all of my client’s success stories. Throughout the year I have had a number of trainers and gyms tell me that they have purchased my book for their clients and have taken them through the programs. I have even been told that my book has become the women’s version of Arnold’s Encyclopedia for women in one gym who all carry it under arm as they march into the gym and all have it dog eared and marked up. Many of the trainers are using the programs straight out of my book with their clients and have been getting great results.
This is when I realized that I could help a lot more people if I gave trainer’s the tools to be an effective coach and carry out my program using everything I use when I coach my clients.
When writing my book I included everything I could possibly think of when it comes to what I teach my clients, the principles and philosophies I use and even every visual cue I say to my clients. Some of the visual cues in my book are some of the most effective coaching tools you can have in your toolbox.
Over the year I have also been reminded that there are trainers who need help understanding how to help women (especially male trainers). In the mean time, more and more women are figuring out that lifting weights and challenging themselves is the answer to changing their body long term and they need help. The great thing is- women aren’t afraid to ask for help, they aren’t like men. Women will stop and ask for directions. But as a trainer you need to make sure you have the tools and know how to help them.
In fact, very recently we had a client join our gym who had hired a trainer at another gym and told him that she really wanted to challenge herself and lift a little heavier and see what she can push herself to do. The trainer told her- “No, you don’t want to do less than 10 reps and we will keep the weights light so you don’t get bulky. And you should do cardio 3-4 days a week.” She fired that trainer and tried to do it on her own until she found us. She has to drive out of her way to come train with us but over the last 12 weeks we have helped her to challenge herself to find out what she can do, rather then telling her – you can’t do that, you’re a girl. She just competed in her first powerlifting competition lifting a total of 457 lbs!
Realizing that I can help a lot more women if I give trainers the tools they need to help women, my target audience has shifted over this last year from general population to trainers and coaches around the world who want to be the best at helping women to transform their bodies and minds.
My book has all of the information, the programs and the visual cues I use with my clients but it doesn’t have the behind the scenes, pull back the curtain and find out what goes on in my head including the dialogue I have with my client’s to build trust, the cues I use to coach the exercises and the exact questions I ask them to pull their potential out in them.
